13,000 Reviews & 1 Preview

***UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF POST***

Have you been to the Thirteen Reasons Why website recently? Along with the YouTube videos, Hannah's map, and podcasts, readers have been posting mini-reviews, and we're fast approaching the 13,000th review!

In honor of that upcoming milestone, I'm giving away two signed copies of the book to two of my favorite people. And one of those people could be you!

At the end of the day that we reach 13,000, I'll randomly select two people who've left comments on this post. So check back, and when I announce the winners, I'll tell you how to give me your mailing address.

And now for the preview...

This summer, Thirteen Reasons Why will finally be coming out in paperback! If you haven't already seen the announcement at Publishers Weekly, check it out. The cover has been altered slightly, leaving Hannah on the swing while replacing the background with silver foil. I can't wait to hold this shiny baby in my hands!

UPDATE:
Because a lot more people have been leaving comments than I expected, I'm going to double the amount of books being given away, so now there are four books up for grabs! And in case you aren't particularly strategy-minded, if you leave a comment here and at the above website, we'll reach 13,000 even sooner. And the sooner the contest ends, the less time others will have to enter it, making your chances even better.

Of course, I'm only saying this because I get impatient easily and I want to give the books to four of you right now!!!

Oooh! I want to win this book. It's next on my list to check out from the library (library = lame for supporting other authors, i know, but i'm working with limited means here). i just attended the NYC SCBWI conference and you were still the talk of the town. So congratulations and holy shite 13,000 reviews. go you.

all best,

I would love to win an autographed copy of this book. I read it for the first time in summer of '09 and i've read it countless times since then. The message of the book was fantastic and the style of writing is so unique. Even though I know what happens everytime i pick it up I'm still hooked. by far one of my favorite books of all time :)

I loved this book. I was sorry that I missed when you came to my school, but hey, I got your autograph! Though you spelled my name wrong, but that was rather amusing. Still, I loved your book and thought that the way you wrote it was amazing

What a wonderful way to celebrate this milestone. I always promote your book in the Professional Development course on YAL I do. Plus, my students are using your book for their final projects this semester.

Jay, the more I study bullying, the more I realize you hit every note in 13 R3Asons Why. Not only is in an incredible read--it is probably the best tool for sensitizing kids and teachers, and for pushing us toward a culture of intolerance--intolerance for bullying! Thanks for speaking for those who have fallen silent--and for those who will refuse to go under!

Amberdenise said...

I can't wait for the paperback to come out! I have been "dying" (not the best word to use) to use this book in a teen book club at my library, but I haven't been able to since its not in paperback yet. Thanks for writing such an amazing book! It's one of my all time favorites.

I would LOVE to win your book Jay! Congrats!! You had me at SHINY!

We just recently had a bullying issue with our daughter on the bus. Thank goodness for being able to keep our tempers under control & for camera's and audio on buses! The boy that was bullying our daughter will HOPEFULLY never do it again to anyone!

This book will make me cry huh?

Thanks for the chance to win!

Wow. 13,000 reviews is quite a milestone,Jay! I would love to win a copy for my H.S. classroom. My students LOVE your book. :-)

Message here from New Zealand - yes, W-A-Y downunder... I have just read of the phenomenal success of your book in my PW email and want very much to read it and see just why... What is it about this story, your writing, that is touching so many YA readers? (I didn't see the Kiwi cover in that colossal list from throughout the world ;-) But even if there was one, a copy would be so much better coming from the actual man who penned/typed himself into the literary history books. I could come up with 13 reasons why I want this, but it's simple really - it sounds good. I want to read it! (And I like shiny things too, especially book covers!!!) Congratulations...

Wow, congratulations, Jay! :D You remain one of my favourite YA authors, so hurry and get that new book of yours into the churner. Can't wait to read it.

I'm not sure if you'd even be willing to send internationally, so yeah . . . I guess I enter only if I can. But I'd be willing to pay off the excess fees. Anything for a signed copy of Th1rteen R3asons Why. *creepy smile*

Dayse D. said...

WOW! This looks really great. And I'm not just saying that as in "I'll say anything to win this book", I am seriously looking forward to read this. It's one of those books that you look at the cover and you just know it's going to become one of your favorite books of all times, you know what I mean? I know, I know, we're not supposed to judge the book by its cover, but I think that only works metaphorically. Personally, I've been judging books by their cover all my life, and very rarely have I been wrong. But anyway, this book is way more about the cover, I know that. I don't even know why I broght this cover thing up. May I start over?
This book sounds great, can't wait to read it and if it's a sign copy, EVEN BETTER.
and that's that. :D

As a high school English teacher, I have to say that I was blown away by this book! Never before have I read a book that really made me stop and think about how I can help change the bullying in our high schools! I will be reading this to my class because I think with all of the bullying and hate that is going on in this world, I think it is so important for students (or anyone for that matter) to take a step back and think about how their actions effect others. I would LOVE a copy of this book so that I can share the beauty of it with my classroom!

This book as made me look at own life and wonder how far I've come from being like the main character. 13 Reasons Why is such a great book because it could happen to anyone and most of the people around them wouldn't understand the reasons behind that person's actions. I've shown this book to other people I know that have struggled with depression and suicide and they feel in love with this book to the point that they started turning their lives around. I actually picked this book up the other day because someone on a blog I read said it was a really good book. And it really was! I actually stayed up all night reading it because I could not put it down. I have never before read a book in one night, but I HAD to know what was going to happen next, why Clay was on the tapes, and I secretly wanted her to be alive just living secretly in another town with her parents. Sadly, that wasn't what happened, but I still absolutely LOVED this book. I passed it off to my roommate and she read it in a day and loved it as well. It was very touching and very life altering. I don't think I can give enough praise to this book.

I LOVE this book. This book made me care more about people no matter how mean they are to me, how friendly they are, or if they don't know me. You shouldn't judge people too quickly.

I read and listened to the audiobook a while ago, but it's the kind of book that stays with you. Congratulation on it being made into a film, I can't wait to see it.

God must be very proud of you because you've created such a beautiful masterpiece called Thirteen Reasons Why. It's more than a story of a girl committing suicide, it's a life changer. When I read it, I was going through a time in my life where I barely had any friends. It had inspired me to look to the people that are ostracized. So, that I may reach out to these people.

I had recently given my own copy to my friend who has dealed with anything from suicidal thoughts to cutting herself. She's nearly done with your book, and she's already making an impact at our school. A friend of our's has been a target for bullying at our school recently. She even told me, one day at lunch, that she'll commit suicide if I leave her at lunch. That day everyone at lunch left her, but I stayed and comforted her(along with the friend who I just gave the book to).

My friends keep on telling me how stupid some people are. I always respond on how that person doesn't need to be treated that way. That we need to love one another, like Our God has loved us. They'll always look at me with that look in their eyes. "Who do you think you are?" It's a good question, but I know who I am. I am a human being with emotions. I cry just like other people. Furthermore, I used to be one of those that cry every night. Now, I smile in the hope that I might be able to help someone through their days.

Teenagers are captured by the thought that no one like them. I've been through my fair share of bullying. Possibly I've been through it more than anyone else, but I'm not the one to say so. It doesn't matter how much I've been knocked away from the crowd. What matters is how much I affect people and how I affect people. Am I burning people to the point where they are ready to commit suicide or am I helping people rise out of such a drought like that?

Jay Asher, you have inspired me to write a moving book. I have always been a writer. However, after reading your novel I realize I have to write to inspire. I inspire people in my daily life, but inspiring people through writing is another thing. I adore Thirteen Reasons Why so much that I wrote a book report on it. After my friend finishes reading the book, I expect her to also pass on the book. After finishing the book myself, I initially thought of sending the book anonymously to a girl who made me lose all my popularity and ruined my life. Instead, I decided to just transform my middle school with the power of beautifully crafted words against suicide.

As you can tell, your book is absolutely my favorite. I don't mind if I don't win it. I'd rather someone who hasn't read the book yet recieve it. In that case, they'll pass the book on in their city. A movement can begin anywhere, and it can begin with anyone. I'm sure that your family never thought you'll begin a movement, Jay, but you did. Your book is a total blessing.

Congrats on recieving almost 13,000 reviews. Your famous now. xD Best wishes to the upcoming care takers of the autographed paperbacks!

With Love,
Savannah
