Well, go out and buy the latest issue of EW!
My favorite magazine includes a feature article on Thirteen Reasons Why and me!
I found out EW wanted to interview me shortly before we left for New York. But I didn't know I'd be doing a photoshoot until after we landed. In a way, that was probably good because I would've stressed too much about what clothes to bring. Instead, I showed up with what I had. The hair and make-up artist said my hair looked fine. When I told her that's because I go to Supercuts, she gave me a high-five. She also loved my shoes, which I told her I got at Ross (Dress for Less), which earned me another high-five!
Two men moved around lights and all sorts of other fancy equipment, the photographer snapped hundreds of photos, and Radiohead blasted through the loft. Here are a few shots taken by my Penguin publicist, Elyse, on her phone:
The session started by taking some photos with a window-view of NYC over my shoulder.
Then they took some shots of me sitting on a desk in front of a chalkboard. At one point, I wrote "Everything affects everything" on the board.
Then I noticed a swing attached to the ceiling that had been pulled out of view. That seemed like an obvious prop, so they took a few photos of me sitting, standing, and swinging on that.
When I left the photoshoot and headed back to meet JoanMarie and Isaiah, only one thought played over and over in my mind. "Dude, I'm going to be in Entertainment Weekly!"
Thank you, Rob Brunner. You somehow boiled down two hours of my rambling into a great article, getting me to talk about aspects of writing I've never opened up about before. Thank you, John Huba. You and your crew were so much fun to talk to and laugh with, keeping me from feeling too nervous about...y'know...having my picture taken for my favorite magazine! And thank you, Elyse Marshall. You always handle everything related to Thirteen Reasons Why with so much care.
(If you've already read the magazine article, you know that Thirteen Reasons Why finally comes out in paperback this Tuesday - June 14. And if you didn't know, now you know! Along with a slightly altered and very cool cover, it includes an excerpt from this November's The Future of Us.)
That is so cool! Running out to buy EW right now! :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Jay! That's amazing! I can't wait to pick up the issue.
ReplyDeleteBest magazine ever. I've had a subscription since 1991 and I read it cover to cover every week. What a pleasant surprise to see you in the pages of the latest edition.
ReplyDeleteI know I congratulated you on twitter already, but, congrats again. It's a pretty big deal!
*whistles* Congrats, Jay! This is HUGE!
ReplyDeleteOh, dude, this is awesome! I'm going to head right over to my neighborhood indie bookstore and pick up a copy of Entertainment Weekly - and I'll tell the owner to make sure he orders a copy of the 13 Reasons Why paperback for me! :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Jay! Have a GREAT week!
Awesome! The problem is: My side of the world is EW free :( I'll check ebay and other websites until I get my copy.
ReplyDelete[Barney Stinson] Challenge accepted! [/Barney Stinson]
I love the picture of you on the swing. This is so awesome :) Yay, congrats Jay!!
ReplyDeleteI just read the article on-line, which doesn't have the pictures, but is awesome none the less!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I can get Entertainment Weekly here in the UK, so I will have to have a look around...
Jay, I absolutely loved this article. My husband's been subscribing to EW for years now, and every week, I grab the issue, and flip through the entire thing until I reach the book stuff. How wonderful to see an entire article on you and your incredible debut novel! The dinner with your wife part... and following your dreams... yeah, that's when the waterworks began.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU for sharing your gift with us, for making us believe in ourselves, too. We need that more than we know.
Awesome article, Jay. It must be a great feeling (even if it's sometimes scary) to know how intensely the TRW story has touched so many people.
ReplyDeleteRead the article and immediately downloaded the book on my Kindle. Read the book in a day and have to tell you that I loved it. I hope many, many people, of all ages, read this and recognize the impact they have on a person everyday in everything they do and don't do. Thanks for writing a great novel and I look forward to what you'll publish next.
ReplyDeleteThat is incredible! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteI'll be sure to look for a copy of EW when I go to the store this week, :)
Jay! You have a spread in EW! You were my bud before, but now you're my hero.
ReplyDeleteWoo hoo!!!!
Can't wait to grab my copy.
So amazing and so well-deserved! Congratulations, Jay.
ReplyDeleteThat's RAD, Jay! What an honor!
ReplyDeleteThat's cool! I'll make sure to buy a copy. :)
ReplyDeleteNicely done, Master J. Good shoe choice too. Just think, you are now one degree of separation from Justin Bieber!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a complete blast! I especially love the "behind the photos" photos. Oh, and the swing!!! Perfect. :-)
ReplyDeleteCongrats! That's really cool! I already read the online article (which was great), but I'll have to check out the actual magazine.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! It's great that 13 Reasons Why is becoming so well known - It totally should be.
ReplyDeleteCongrats. I was so excited to see your interview when I got my issue in the mail. I LOVE EW as well. It was a great article. :)

The EW article is where I heard about the book. As soon as I read the article I downloaded Thirteen Reasons Why to my Kindle.
ReplyDelete*high five*
ReplyDeleteSo happy for you, Asher. :)
You are so cool. Unfortunately, I can't access E-dub from here, but congrats!
ReplyDeleteHi, Jay! I was never as excited to have subscribed to EW as I was last week when I opened up my copy and found an article on 13 Reasons Why. It's one of my all time favorite books and I'm glad it's getting the attention it deserves!
ReplyDeleteAnd my subscription had to run out right before this issue... >< I'll try to buy it at a store. ^.^ Thats so cool
ReplyDeleteLiving in Canada, my EW didn't arrive so I had to buy it on the newsstand. Then I got busy with kids, and didn't get around to reading it till this past Friday. One of my favorite things about the magazine is the attention they give to books, so I began to read the interview with you and immediately (1 in the morning) went to my computer to verify my local bookstore had it in stock. I went the next morning and now have it in my house.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I sat up and took notice is because my Masters thesis (I graduate with a Masters in Educational Technology this November) is on cyberbullying awareness, and that is also my new field of work. Bullying in all forms is insidious these days and that your book is now resurging is not a coincidence.
I particularly like the insight into your process, into your keen desire to be published, and the enjoyment of your success. I plan to read the book shortly, but have already recommended it.
Looking forward to digging into the pages and congratulations!
